SAVANA is built on a core principle: protecting wildlife comes first. This shapes every decision we make about data, including yours.

1. Who we are

SAVANA is a mobile application for wildlife sightings, safari guide booking, and park exploration in Kenya. The app is operated by SAVANA Limited (Kenya).

2. Data we collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide the service:

Account information — email address, first and last name, profile photo (optional)
Location data — GPS coordinates when you post a sighting, with your explicit consent. We apply a mandatory 2-hour delay before publishing coordinates for all species except elephants and rhinoceros, whose locations are permanently hidden.
Device information — push notification token (to send booking alerts)
Content you post — sighting descriptions, photos, comments
Booking data — safari dates, guest count, guide selected, payment amount

3. Anti-poaching protection

Elephant and rhinoceros GPS coordinates are permanently blocked and never stored or transmitted. All other species have a mandatory 2-hour delay before location data is shared, in compliance with the Kenya Wildlife Conservation and Management Act 2013.

This is not just a policy — it is enforced at the code level and cannot be overridden by any user.

4. How we use your data

To display wildlife sightings on the feed and Wild Map
To match you with available safari guides
To send booking confirmations and notifications
To display your profile and sighting history
To improve the app and fix bugs

We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising. SAVANA is ad-free.

5. Data sharing

We share your data only with:

Supabase (database and file storage, EU region)
Expo / EAS (push notifications)
Apple (App Store distribution)
Safari guides — your name and booking details are shared with the guide you book

We do not share your data with any other third parties.

6. Location data

Location access is requested only when you post a sighting. You can choose to disable location sharing at any time. Location data is stored with your sighting and displayed on the Wild Map after the 2-hour delay, unless the species is protected (elephant, rhinoceros), in which case it is never stored.

7. Your rights

You have the right to:

Access all personal data we hold about you
Request correction of inaccurate data
Request deletion of your account and all associated data
Withdraw consent for location sharing at any time

To exercise these rights, contact us at contact@savana.app. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all personal data is permanently removed within 30 days. Anonymised sighting data (without GPS coordinates or user identifiers) may be retained for conservation research purposes.

9. Security

All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Access to the database is restricted to authorised personnel only. We use Supabase Row Level Security to ensure users can only access their own data.

10. Children

SAVANA is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via the app. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
